58-year-old Rishab walked into Laksha Care for a regular dental check-up. He complained of some ulcers in his mouth. Upon physical examination, our skilled dental team also observed a non-healing ulceration on his lower lip.

On further probing, it was revealed that the ulcer had been present for the past six months. Our experts asked some important questions to help make their diagnosis. When questioned about his sun exposure, Rishab revealed that he spent much time outdoors in the sun. Rishab was a non-smoker, with no recent injuries near his mouth, and he was not on any medication.

Armed with this information, our team performed clinical examinations. There were no abnormal findings in the head and neck. Rishab’s lymph nodes were also non-palpable. All his vital signs were normal.

However, on palpating his lip, the periphery of a lesion was felt. It was an ulcerative lesion, 1 cm in diameter observed on the vermilion of his lip.

With these presenting symptoms, there were many probable diagnoses. It could have been erosive lichen planus: an autoimmune disease affecting mucosal surfaces. It could have also been actinic cheilitis: lip inflammation caused due to excessive sun exposure. Or it could have been squamous cell carcinoma or oral cancer: cancer occurring between the border of the lips, at the junction of the hard and soft palates, or on the posterior one-third of the tongue.

Our expert dental team made the correct and timely diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Based on his history, and physical and clinical examinations, our team inferred Rishab had oral cancer.

It is important to note that 95% of those who suffer from oral squamous cell carcinoma have a history of smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, or both. It is pertinent to avoid these addiction-forming habits and do your future self a lifesaving favor!

Once diagnosed, our team immediately rendered timely treatment to Rishab. A surgical excision was performed, followed by radiation therapy. Our doctors may use Moh’s micrographic surgery (the gold standard for the complete removal of skin cancer) to remove some lip lesions in the future.

The subsequent prognosis of Rishab was highly favorable. He has been asked to visit Laksha Care next month for a follow-up to ensure complete care.

This routine dental check-up at Laksha Care ended up saving Rishab’s life. This is your sign to visit Laksha Care today to schedule a dental check-up with our experts and ensure your teeth are okay and your smile remains pearly white!
